SciMathUS

Science and Mathematics at the University of Stellenbosch

If you do not comply with the entry requirements for higher education, SciMathUS may open a door for you to gain access to higher education if you are willing to work hard!

Do you want to become ...?

...an engineer, a medical doctor or a chartered accountant?

Have you ever given thought about becoming a soil scientist or a mining and mineral exploration consultant?

Or a microbiologist, a biochemist, a geneticist or a biotechnologist? Do you want to unravel the exact functioning of microscopic cells?

Do you know that a food scientist converts raw materials into innovative, safe, wholesome and tasty food products that are available in supermarkets?

What about being a computer consultant or an international geological or environmental science consultant solving the world's conservation challenges?

Or a game farm manager, involved in ecotourism, community-based natural resource management and environment-oriented, sustainable production in agriculture and forestry?

Ever thought of managing animal production systems in an environmentally friendly and economically effective way?

Someone must think about growing and harvesting of timber, and the management of plantations…

South Africa needs nuclear physicists developing and utilising alternative energy resources or physicists who use lasers for materials processing, etching, pollution monitoring, optical fibre communication, for eye treatments, cancer radiation, the removal of varicose veins and birthmarks and for surgical procedures

What about being a radiation physicists working in a hospital as a radiation control official or in a nuclear power station or a uranium mine?

Ever wondered what the cheapest method to transport new vehicles from different harbours to motor traders is or how the quality of service of a product can be measured?

Or do you want to get engaged in various market-related activities such as product decisions, pricing, product distribution, and creating awareness, through advertising, of the products and services the business has available?

Or what about becoming a Maths or Science teacher? Or a researcher?

Who, what where and when?

A Bit of History

Stellenbosch University launched the SciMathUS Post Matric Programme in 2001. This was initiated to address the situation of too few black people entering tertiary education for training in the natural sciences, applied natural sciences and the economic and management sciences.

Students from disadvantaged schools who demonstrate potential are selected for the Programme and registered as special day students at the University.

The Programme is managed by IMSTUS (IWWOUS) and is located on the main campus of Stellenbosch University.

The structured 10-month Programme accommodates up to 100 students per year and creates the opportunity for students to gain entry to university, following a year of intensive tuition.
