Ons Kernbedrywighede

IWWOUS is in 1977 gestig en is deel van die Fakulteit Opvoeding aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch. IWWOUS is egter 'n nie-winsgewende organisasie wat hoofsaaklik deur die privaatsektor befonds word.

Ons kerndoel is om Wiskunde- en Wetenskaponderwys te verryk en te transformeer deur leerkragte en leerders van voorheen benadeelde gemeenskappe, d.m.v. vennootskappe te bemagtig.

Ons glo dat ons 'n tasbare bydrae lewer aangesien ons 'n langtermyn, volhoubare benadering volg in 'n land met 'n groot tekort aan vaardighede in die Wiskunde en Natuurlike Wetenskappe velde.

Our Core Business

IMSTUS was established in 1977 and is part of the Faculty of Education at Stellenbosch University. We are however a not-for-profit organisation, primarily funded by the private sector.

Our core purpose is to enrich and transform Mathematics and Science education by empowering educators and learners from historically disadvantaged communities through partnerships.

We believe we make a tangible contribution, as we adopt a long-term, sustainable approach in a country with a dire need for skills in the fields of Mathematics and the Natural Sciences.

Hoe doen ons dit?

• Ons ondersteun en rus opvoeders akademies en didakties toe om strategieë vir klaskamer- en kurrikulêre bestuur effektief te implementeer. Ons doen dit deur:
  • opleidingswerkwinkels; en
  • fasiliteerders wat skole besoek om die vooruitgang van opvoeders te monitor en ondersteuning aan te bied.
  • Ons moedig opvoeders ook aan om hul beter te bekwaam en vir formele studies aan die Universiteit in te skryf. IWWOUS administreer die ten volle geakkrediteerde Gevorderde Onderwyssertifikaat programme (GOS) wat deur die Universiteit van Stellenbosch aangebied word.
• By leerders moedig ons 'n belangstelling in en entoesiasme vir beroepe in die Wetenskappe en Wiskunde-verwante velde aan;
• Ons moedig hulle aan en help hulle om wetenskaplike navorsing te begin doen en aan kompetisies soos Expo vir Jong Wetenskaplikes deel te neem.
• Ons bied ook 'n jaarlange oobruggingsprogram (SciMathUS) aan om talentvolle en belowende leerders voor te berei vir hoofstroom tersiêre studies in skaars velde.

Ons werk nou saam, en in vennootskap met, die Wes-Kaapse Onderwysdepartement (WKOD) en ons doen voortdurend navorsing en ontwikkeling in samewerking met internationale vennote aangaande uitkomsgebaseerde onderrig.

How do we do this?

• We equip and support teachers academically and didactically to implement strategies for classroom and curriculum management effectively. We do this by offering;
  • training workshops;
  • facilitators who visit schools to monitor the progress of teachers and to offer support;
  • We empower and encourage teachers to further their studies at the University. IMSTUS administers the fully accredited Advanced Certificate in Education (ACE) offered by the Universty of Stellenbosch.
• We promote interest and enthusiasm amongst learners for careers in Science and Mathematics related fields;
• We encourage and assist them to start doing scientific research and then participate in competitions such as Expo for Young Scientists;
• We offer a year long briding programme (SciMAthUS)to prepare talented and promising learners for mainstream tertiary studies in scarce fields.

We work in close co-operation and in partnership with the Western Cape Education Department (WCED)and we do continuous research and development in conjunction with overseas partners regarding outcomes-based education.
